Drive the Digital Maturity of your Organization (…but first, assess it…)
When a major disruption hits the market (like digital), Organizations are exposed to a very severe risk: the «competency trap», i.e. the preconcept or bias that the competencies that allowed an organization to be succesful in the past, will serve well even in front of a disruption. Digital Disruption cannot be dealt with on this assupmtion. To be managed or – better – exploited, it needs new competencies.
To minimize the risk of being caught off guard, an organization should try to understand how to adapt its strategy, its structure and culture, its business model and the leadership style/model to cope with the digital disruption of its market/segment and position itself to better compete.
Before moving into “action-mode”, Management should the scope assess the readiness/maturity of the organization to support the shift and exploit the opportunities that a digitally advanced organization can offer in terms of growth, expansion of customer base and profitability/efficiency. This “assessment” is not a generic readiness check-up, as it involves several dimensions, in many cases specific to the digital world. To be ready – not just to manage the digital disruption, but to exploit it – any organization should go through a digital maturity chek-up to assess the degree to which organizations have adapted/can adapt/are ready to adapt themselves to a digital business environment
